High school football to kickoff on Thursday night

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- For the 2nd straight season, the high school football season will kickoff on a Thursday.  This year, there will be a doubleheader at Memorial Stadium in the first ever CharlottePreps Kickoff Night powered by OrthoCarolina.  The event will be August 22nd.

In game one, defending NCISAA Division 1 state champ Charlotte Christian will take on Sun Valley.  Kickoff is set for 5:30.

In the 2nd game, former conference rivals South Meck and Independence will take on each other 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.

These 2 games will be the only games played on a Thursday in the first week of the season so they will be on the big stage.

Part of the money raised in this event will benefit CMS middle schools athletics. 

Last year, A.L. Brown took on Shelby on a Thursday night in a game not related to this event.

Forestview wins 2nd straight 3A state golf championship

Foxfire Village, NC (WBTV)- For the 2nd straight year, the Forestview Jaguars have claimed the 3A state championship in golf as they won by 22 shots over Burlington High School.

Forestview would have 3 golfers in the top 11 finishers to pace their championship run.  Will Long would win the individual state title after shooting a 6 under 66 today.  Long will play his college golf at Auburn next season.

Joining Long in the top 11 for Forestview were Will Blalock who was tied for 5th, Drew Jurs who finish in 8th, and Alex Taylor who finish tied for 11th.

Other local golfers who finished in the top 11 include South Point's Nick Stafford would finish in 2nd just one shot behind Long, South Rowan's Davis Richards would finished tied for 3rd,  Charlotte Catholic's Ethan Mead finished 9th, and Colton Naslund who finished tied for 11th.

Every year, thousands of young football fans dream of breaking the huddle with hero Steve Smith. Showmars, a proud sponsor of Steve Smith’s Football ProCamp, is making that dream a reality for four Charlotte-area children this summer.

Showmars is giving away four spots to the 2013 Steve Smith Football ProCamp. Football fans can sign up by filling out an entry form at any of Showmars 28 Charlotte-Metro locations.

ProCamp is a youth athletic camp for children in grades 1- 8. Established in 1998, the camp provides thousands of youth the opportunity to attend camp with their sporting heroes. At the camp, attendees learn football fundamentals and meet children their own age with like interests.

This year’s ProCamp event will be held at Ardrey Kell High School on Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11.

Tar Heels, Gamecocks to meet in Charlotte to kick off 2015 season

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The "Battle of the Carolinas" is coming to Charlotte as the University of North Carolina faces off with the University of South Carolina to kick off the 2015 college football season.

The Charlotte Sports Foundation announced on Thursday morning that it secured a regular season college football game for the city of Charlotte, pitting the Tar Heels against the Gamecocks.

The game will take place on September 5, 2015 at Bank of America Stadium. The kickoff time and ticket information will be announced at a later date.

Athletic directors Ray Tanner, from South Carolina, and Bubba Cunningham, from North Carolina, took part in the press conference on Thursday morning.

South Carolina won a coin toss and chose to be the home team for the game.  If the two teams meet again in Charlotte, UNC will be the automatic home team.

Emily Stinson ready to swing with the pros

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Ardrey Kell senior golfer Emily Stinson is getting ready to play in her first professional tournament. She'll tee off at the Symetra Classic at Raintree tomorrow at 8:50.

She's truly an amazing story! Picked up the game only 5 years ago.

She has scoliosis but Emily has helped Ardrey Kell win 2 state golf titles and will play next year at Appalachian State.

As the only amateur in the field, Emily was a little nervous, but a practice round with professional Izzy Beisiegel helped calm her down and now she's handling her sudden celebrity quite well.

ACC announces schedule for 2013 Belk Bowl

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the dates, networks and game times for its 2013 Football Bowl Games, including Charlotte's Belk Bowl.

The Belk Bowl will have the fourth selection of an ACC team after the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and will be played this year on December 28 at 3:20 p.m.

The game, which is being held on a Saturday this year, will be televised by ESPN.

The game will feature an opponent from the American Athletic Conference.

This is where some of you may say... who?  

The American Athletic Conference is the new name for the former Big East Conference. The conference announced the decision last month after university presidents approved the new name.
