Prep Zone: Charlotte Catholic student swimming toward success

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Charlotte Catholic is going for their eleventh consecutive women's swimming title and helping them to this victory is Ali McDonough.

The 17 year old has been swimming competitively since age 5 and looks to continue into college, similar to her sister. Kristen McDonough swam for Charlotte Catholic under the same coach and now swims for Notre Dame.

Ali looks up to her sister and wants to follow in her footsteps to swim for the fighting Irish.

She wants to get her Olympic time cuts and finish her years at Charlotte Catholic with 4 state titles. The goal isn't farfetched under the coaching style of Brian Gross. Coach Gross has been with the school for 12 years, 10 of those with a women's title and runner-up titles for the men's team.

Coach said, "Ali has some big shoes to fill, but she's done a great job since her sister left."

Many relying less on police, more on personal protection from concealed weapons

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - It's a sign and sound of the times. Chances are someone you know is packing heat. "Most people are scared of something, they hear a bump in the night, they read a crime report, the Lancaster incident."

It might sound cliche, but the reality for many people is that police just can't be everywhere at once. That leads many to places like Carolina Sporting Arms where Donald Ingram is noticing a trend in business.

"Most people don't just want to buy a gun, they want to have it at their disposal; either hidden in their car or on their person when they go shopping somewhere," Ingram said.

To meet that need, Ingram's store offers classes to obtain concealed carry permits. It's a class that is filling up everyday. Numbers obtained from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office certainly point to that.
